南会津町・高杖原は標高約1,000mの高原地帯にある。寒暖差のある気候からそば作りが盛んで、日本最大級の「たかつえそば畑」の広さはゆうに12ha。東京ドーム2.5個分の広さに匹敵する。
　初秋には、そばの花が満開となり、近年観光地としても人気。所々に立つ白樺の木が景観の良いアクセントとなっており、ここならではの景色となっている。毎年9月初旬にライトアップも行われるので、夜のデートスポットとしてもおすすめ。秋は町内各地でそばの収穫祭も行われるので、そばの生育と共に何度も訪れたい町だ。
