大蛇退治の伝説が残る沼沢湖。湖の主である沼御前は、鎌倉時代に悪さをしたという十数メートルにも及ぶ雌の大蛇。会津領主・佐原十郎義連に退治されてからも、若く美しい女性の姿で現れたという。
　毎年8月に、その伝説を模した祭りが2日間にかけて行われる。1日目のクライマックスは、湖に大蛇が出現する水上花火大会。暗い海の上で、花火に照らされる大蛇の妖しく艶やかな姿は必見。2日目は大蛇退治の再現演技が行われる。
